MPEG4 encoding is the solution for cable companies and sat providers to go 1080p, but they will have some legacy equipment issues on their older boxes that are on the market. Coax can handle transmission speeds up to 3 Gig, with the correct cable and connectors. Until mfg start building consumer equipment with BNC connections though it can not be implemented at the consumer level. Once again, the individual affiliates in each market may be cross converting what they receive from the networks to a different format, which will depend on how they are encoding their signal prior to transmission.Д¬oax can and will do 1080p as it is done every day in broadcast. Over the air, most of the networks are doing 1080i, with Fox being the exception at 720p from the network. Unfortunately, the MPEG4 standard is not backwards compatible, and most of the older set top boxes can not de-code MPEG4 streams, so over the air broadcasters are not using the MPEG4 equipment.
